Lewis NP practicums in southern Illinois, from Effingham to Cairo
Southern Illinois spans 30 counties from Effingham to the Ohio River, and 28 of them are nonmetro. It is the farthest region from the Romeoville campus, about 315 miles to Carbondale, and its three main hospital systems each spell out whom they favor and how a request moves.

A rural region with five small hubs
The region's 569,170 residents (July 2025 Census estimates) gather around five micropolitan hubs: Carbondale in Jackson County, Marion-Herrin in Williamson, Mount Vernon in Jefferson, Centralia in Marion County, and Effingham. Alexander County is an outlying part of the Cape Girardeau, MO-IL metro and Massac of the Paducah, KY-IL metro; most other counties sit outside any metro or micro area.
Approximate miles from Lewis: Effingham about 194, Mount Vernon about 261, Marion about 302 and Carbondale about 315. Routing tools overstate the hours on drives this long, so go by distance. IDPH's Marion Region oversees the local health departments here, among them the Egyptian Health Department for Gallatin, Saline and White counties and the Franklin-Williamson Bi-County Health Department.
SIH, Deaconess and SSM Health: three sets of rules
These three systems run nine of the region's hospitals, and each publishes its own terms for NP students.

The IDPH Report Card still lists the Marion and Mount Vernon Deaconess hospitals under older license names, Heartland Regional Medical Center and Crossroads Community Hospital. SSM's order of steps, preceptor first and paperwork second, mirrors Lewis's own expectation, and it is exactly where a preceptor search pays off.
Other hospitals, the VA and the health center network
HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham belongs to a system whose advanced practice student program admits only HSHS colleagues and students from Millikin University or St. John's College of Nursing, which leaves it out of a Lewis search. Carle Richland Memorial in Olney is a Carle hospital, but Carle's NP rotation application lists Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal and Peoria as its locations. The Marion VA Medical Center takes trainees under school-level academic affiliation agreements, set up through the VA's Designated Education Officer.
The Report Card counts 29 hospitals across these counties, many of them small, such as Crawford Memorial in Robinson and Massac Memorial in Metropolis. Statewide, the Illinois Health and Hospital Association counts 85 small and rural hospitals, two-thirds of them critical access hospitals.
Health centers reach nearly every corner: Shawnee Health with 26 sites around Carbondale, Carterville, Marion and Murphysboro; Christopher Rural Health Planning Corporation in Benton, Du Quoin, Mount Vernon, Carmi, Fairfield and Flora; Community Health & Emergency Services in Cairo, Harrisburg and Golconda; Rural Health, Inc. in Anna, Metropolis and Vienna; and SIHF Healthcare in Effingham, Olney, Salem and Vandalia.
Where the shortage scores run highest
HRSA's files (records dated September 24, 2026) put whole-county geographic primary care designations on Alexander (score 21), Pulaski (20), Pope (18), Edwards with Wabash (16), Clay (15) and Washington (15); those for Hamilton, Gallatin, Johnson and Hardin are proposed for withdrawal. Low-income or Medicaid-eligible designations cover almost every other county, led by Jackson (20), Saline (19) and White (18). Higher scores mean greater need.
Mental health shortages blanket the region. The geographic Southern Illinois designation (16) covers 27 of the 30 counties; Effingham and Cumberland sit in the low-income Central Area (18) and Randolph in the low-income Metro East area (16). HRSA's facility list adds 37 rural health clinics, four health center organizations and six correctional facilities.

Lewis puts the student at the center of finding a preceptor, and Clinical Coordinators or track lead faculty judge whether each site and preceptor suits the course (how approval works). Every practicum runs 16 weeks.

Can a Lewis NP student rotate at SIH hospitals in Carbondale or Herrin?
SIH's clinical student rotation page lists NP and DNP students among eligible programs, provided the school holds an active Clinical Experience Agreement with SIH, so ask the Clinical Placement Office whether one is in place for Lewis. SIH favors employees, local residents and southern Illinois students, and a second rotation within a year needs a fresh application.
What does Deaconess require of NP students in Marion or Mount Vernon?
Its advanced practice student page asks for a new application every semester and limits NP and PA students to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The school's clinical coordinator requests the rotation in myClinicalExchange, and once approved, NP students upload items including their RN license there. Deaconess employees and students from local schools get priority.
What does SSM Health mean by securing a provider first?
SSM's clinical placement page tells provider students, NPs among them, to find an SSM Health provider willing to precept before filing the Student Clinical Placement Form. A clinical coordinator and unit managers then review the request, and the page names a regional clinical coordinator for Illinois. That preceptor-first order is where our search does its work in Mount Vernon and Centralia.
Can a rural health clinic host my Lewis practicum?
Rural health clinics are everywhere here: HRSA lists 37 as shortage facilities in these counties. A clinic works for a Lewis practicum when its preceptor fits your course and Clinical Coordinators or track lead faculty approve it, and it will need Lewis's contract request plus an affiliation agreement if none exists.
