Finding a Lewis NP preceptor inside the City of Chicago
Chicago has 2.7 million residents, 29 hospitals on the state's report card and health center sites run by 25 organizations, yet the systems that publish NP student rules mostly want the preceptor named before a request goes in. Chicago at a glance
The City of Chicago had 2,731,585 residents on July 1, 2025, according to the Census Bureau, all of them on the Cook County side of the city line. The Chicago Department of Public Health serves as the city's own health department, and the Illinois Hospital Report Card counts 29 hospitals within city limits before adding the VA.
Central Chicago is about 29 miles from Lewis's Romeoville campus, roughly 44 minutes in a routing estimate that ignores traffic; rush hour can add a great deal more. The city is entirely urban, so the real questions are neighborhood and commute, not whether a clinic exists nearby. Rush's own FAQ places Rush, Stroger Hospital, the University of Illinois Hospital and the West Side VA hospital together in the Illinois Medical District.
Systems that publish a student route
Four Chicago employers describe on their own pages how outside students reach them, and three of the four name myClinicalExchange.
- Advocate Health Care, at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and Advocate Trinity Hospital. Its placement page says Advocate places Illinois inpatient NP students but does not locate preceptors for Illinois nurse practitioner rotations; the school files the request and onboarding in myClinicalExchange.
- Endeavor Health, at Swedish Hospital. Its practicum application for licensed nurses has the student line up a preceptor who approves the rotation before applying, and Swedish sites also require a program-specific Program Memorandum. Requests carry firm dates: March 1 for fall and winter, August 1 for spring and summer.
- Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, in Streeterville. APRN applications open three times a year: for May to August 2027 the window runs October 1 to December 1, 2026, and for August to December 2027 it runs December 1, 2026 to February 1, 2027. Graduate nursing students need an active Illinois RN license, AHA BLS, immunizations and malpractice insurance, uploaded through My Clinical Exchange.
- Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, part of VA Chicago. VA training runs through academic affiliation agreements that a school arranges with the local VA's education officer.
Lurie says it holds APRN affiliation agreements with multiple Chicago-area and national schools, so competition for its slots, and for hospital slots across the city, is real.
Landmark hospitals with nothing public on NP students
Several of the city's best-known hospitals post no page for NP students from other schools. Each can still become a Lewis site the usual way: a named preceptor, a contract request and, if needed, an affiliation agreement.
- Rush University Medical Center, UI Health's University of Illinois Hospital and Stroger Hospital in the Illinois Medical District. Cook County Health's current education page covers physician assistant students only.
- Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Streeterville, including Prentice Women's Hospital. Northwestern posts its APRN application only for its north and northwest suburban hospitals.
- UChicago Medicine in Hyde Park with Comer Children's Hospital, Sinai Chicago's Mount Sinai and Holy Cross hospitals, and Ascension Saint Joseph - Chicago in Lakeview.
- Resurrection Medical Center and Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital, owned by Prime Healthcare since March 1, 2025, when Prime bought them from Ascension.
- Independent and safety-net hospitals, among them Humboldt Park Health, Saint Anthony, St. Bernard, The Loretto Hospital, Roseland Community, South Shore and La Rabida Children's.
Health centers and neighborhood shortage areas
HRSA's health center file lists active Chicago sites for 25 organizations. By site count the largest are Lawndale Christian Health Center with 45, ACCESS Community Health Network with 23 and Tapestry 360 Health with 15, followed by Howard Brown Health, Esperanza Health Centers, Erie Family Health Centers and UI Health's Mile Square network at 11 each.
Shortage designations here are drawn neighborhood by neighborhood. HRSA's September 2026 files show 43 primary care population designations inside the city, 35 active and 8 proposed for withdrawal, led by Washington Park at a score of 20 and by West Garfield Park, East Garfield Park, Englewood and Woodlawn at 19. Geographic primary care designations cover West Englewood, the East Side, Chicago Lawn, Hegewisch and Humboldt Park.
Mental health designations stand in Brighton Park, South Chicago and Auburn Gresham/Washington Heights, plus a low-income area of 129 census tracts on the city's northwest side. Several others, including Chicago Central and West Englewood/Englewood, are proposed for withdrawal.

Questions Lewis students ask
Does Advocate find NP preceptors for students in Chicago?
Advocate's placement page says it does not locate preceptors for nurse practitioner rotations in Illinois, even though it does place Illinois inpatient NP students. The preceptor has to be arranged before the school submits the myClinicalExchange request, and that is the step our search covers for Lewis students aiming at Illinois Masonic or Trinity.
Can a Lewis student do a pediatric rotation at Lurie Children's?
Lurie appears on the agency list in Lewis's undergraduate catalog, but its APRN process is its own: applications open three times a year, you need an active Illinois RN license, and schools without a current agreement cannot use Lurie's My Clinical Exchange until one is signed. Ask the Clinical Placement Office whether Lewis's agreement covers graduate students before you apply.
Is the Jesse Brown VA nurse practitioner residency open to students?
No. VA Chicago's primary care and psychiatric-mental health NP residencies are post-graduate programs for new nurse practitioners. Student training at the VA runs through academic affiliation agreements between the school and the local VA, which keeps full responsibility for patient care. Jesse Brown appears on Lewis's BSN agency list; ask Lewis whether that agreement reaches NP students.
Does Lewis have a campus in Chicago?
Yes. Lewis acquired St. Augustine College in late 2023 and runs it as St. Augustine College at Lewis University, where the accelerated BSN holds in-person classes. Graduate NP exam rooms and labs are at Lewis University at Oak Brook, and your Chicago practicum can be at any site Lewis approves.
