NURS 62500 and NURS 62700: Lewis's acute care practicums
Lewis's Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP track places two hospital-level practicums, NURS 62500 and NURS 62700, after the shared NURS 61800. Each is a 16-week course that needs an acute care preceptor, a hospital that clears students through its own intake, and an approved Lewis contract request. One catalog line on hours does not add up, and this page shows exactly where.

Where the acute care practicums sit
Lewis's AGACNP track has three practicums, and each one shares a 16-week semester with its management course. You begin with NURS 61800, the adult/gerontology and adolescent practicum shared with the FNP and AGPCNP tracks (it has its own guide), then move into two acute care courses built around hospital-level adult care. The MSN is 46 credits with a catalog minimum of 540 clinical hours; the certificate carries the same clinical courses in 28 credits, and the BSN to DNP AGACNP track places them inside 73.
| Practicum | Paired management course | Clock hours Lewis prints |
|---|---|---|
NURS 61800 NP Practicum: Adult/Gerontology and Adolescents | NURS 61200 | 180 |
NURS 62500 NP Practicum: Acute Care for Adult/Gerontology | NURS 62400 | 360 in the course text (see the conflict below) |
NURS 62700 NP Practicum: Acute Care for Adult/Gerontology 2 | NURS 62600, taken after NURS 62400 and NURS 62500 | None printed |
These pairs follow the MSN core and the four NP specialty courses (NURS 58800, NURS 60400, NURS 60500, NURS 60700). The second acute care pair adds subspecialty care and acute care devices and technology, so a NURS 62700 site where specialty consults and device management are routine fits it best, in our reading.
Raise one catalog quirk early: the NURS 61800 prerequisite line names two primary care courses, NURS 61000 and NURS 61100, that appear nowhere in the AGACNP MSN, certificate or BSN to DNP plans. Your track coordinator can confirm the sequence your plan of study actually follows.
The hour conflict: 360 in one course, 540 in the track
Lewis sets a catalog minimum of 540 clinical hours for the AGACNP, and the graduate FAQ lists the track at 46 credit hours plus 540 clinical hours. The NURS 62500 course description prints something else: "360 total clock hours of practicum; 180 clock hours for every two credit hours." NURS 62700 prints no hours at all, and NURS 61800 prints 180.
Those lines cannot all hold at once. Our arithmetic, not a Lewis figure: add the 180 from NURS 61800 to the printed 360 and the track minimum is used up before NURS 62700 logs a single hour. The ratio inside the same sentence points somewhere else, since a 3-credit course at 180 hours per two credits comes to 270. And if both acute care courses carried the 180 hours that every other Lewis NP practicum prints, the three practicums would total exactly 540.
A plausible explanation is that the NURS 62500 wording was written before Lewis split acute care into two courses. Lewis has not said so, and until it does, the number that governs your semester is the one in your syllabus.
Before you give an acute care preceptor a schedule, ask your AGACNP track coordinator in writing how many hours NURS 62500 and NURS 62700 each require.
What Lewis looks for in an acute care preceptor
Lewis publishes no credential list for AGACNP preceptors. What it does publish is the approval step: each preceptor and site needs sign-off from Lewis's Clinical Coordinators and/or track lead faculty, judged against the course. The contract legend adds two screens that matter in hospitals, since a request can be turned down over a preceptor's IDFPR discipline record or over conduct concerns at the preceptor or agency level.
In practice the match is to the course, not the building. Both acute care practicums center on adult and older adult patients, so the preceptor's daily work should be inpatient or high-acuity adult care. Hospitals also set their own rules: Advocate's student page says a physician or APRN may precept NP students, while Riverside's says its NP students usually work alongside a CNP or CCNS. Confirm with your track coordinator which provider types Lewis accepts before you ask anyone.
Have these ready for each acute care preceptor
- The preceptor's credentials and the state license they practice under, so Lewis's IDFPR screen has what it needs
- The unit or service and the patient population it treats
- The agency's legal name, so the Clinical Placement Office can check for a current affiliation agreement
- The semester you need, because Lewis's approval names the site, the preceptor(s) and the term
- The hospital's own student request route and deadline, where it has one
Hospitals run their own student intake
An acute care placement usually moves through two queues at once: Lewis's contract review and the hospital's own student intake. The systems below describe their processes on their own student pages. These are their rules, not Lewis's.
| System | What its student page says |
|---|---|
| Advocate Health Care | It does not locate preceptors for nurse practitioner students in Illinois; requests and onboarding run through myClinicalExchange |
| Endeavor Health (Edward, Elmhurst, Linden Oaks, Swedish and others) | My Clinical Exchange plus an individual practicum application; due March 1 for fall/winter rotations, August 1 for spring/summer |
| Northwestern Medicine, north and northwest suburbs | Places only students from schools with a current affiliation agreement, gives its own staff priority and asks for at least 4 to 8 weeks |
| Northwestern Medicine, west suburbs | Its Central DuPage and Delnor form is not for APRN students who need patient care hours |
| Morris Hospital | Human Resources handles rotations; a background check and drug screen are required, and the affiliation agreement may take several weeks |
| Riverside Healthcare, Kankakee | Requires an affiliation agreement with Riverside; students apply online through its Graduate Medical Education Department |
Rush's rotation page covers undergraduates only, and no public APRN placement page turned up for UChicago Medicine or Loyola Medicine.
Every one of these systems expects a signed affiliation agreement with the school. Where Lewis has no current agreement with a hospital, Lewis drafts one for the agency to sign, and your request sits at In Review until the signed copy comes back. The affiliation agreements guide explains why that step takes time.
A timeline that respects both queues
Lewis publishes no submission deadline. It wants planning to start when you are admitted, and the contract legend budgets two weeks at minimum for processing, longer when a new agreement has to go out. Hospital intake runs on its own clock, so the schedule below is our planning suggestion for an acute care semester, not a Lewis rule.
- Two semesters aheadChoose the hospitals and services that fit
NURS 62500, read each system's student page for its dates, and settle the hour question with your track coordinator. - Before the hospital's cutoffGet the preceptor's yes and file the hospital's own request where one exists, such as Endeavor's March 1 date for fall/winter rotations.
- As soon as the preceptor agreesSubmit the Lewis contract request with every required field complete, so review starts and any new agreement reaches the agency early. The contract portal guide covers each status.
- Before day oneFinish the hospital's onboarding and any Student Action items, sending copies to the agency and to the Clinical Placement Office. Start only when the portal shows Approved.
- While you are in NURS 62500Line up
NURS 62700. Staying at a hospital that already has a current agreement with Lewis, and whose services fit the subspecialty and device focus, can make the second review simpler.
How we set up both acute care semesters
Lewis's FAQ expects NP students to help with identifying preceptors; we take that search off your hands. We look for acute care preceptors near where you live and work, in hospitalist groups, critical care units and specialty inpatient services whose daily work fits NURS 62500 or NURS 62700.
Before you hear a name from us, we have checked the hospital's student route, its deadline and what the preceptor will need to give Lewis. You receive every detail the contract request asks for, organized for entry, early enough for both reviews to finish before the semester opens.
We plan both acute care courses together, keep hospital onboarding moving, and stay on call through the term. If a preceptor steps away, we begin the replacement search immediately. Tell us your semester on the placement request form, and see how the whole track fits together on the MSN AGACNP page.
Questions Lewis students ask
How many clinical hours is NURS 62500 at Lewis?
The course description says 360 total clock hours, but that figure clashes with the AGACNP's 540-hour minimum once NURS 61800 (180 hours) and NURS 62700 are counted. Lewis has not published a corrected number. Your syllabus and your AGACNP track coordinator decide what you log, so get the figure in writing before you schedule shifts with a preceptor.
Can a physician precept a Lewis AGACNP student?
Lewis does not publish which provider types may precept each NP course; its Clinical Coordinators and/or track lead faculty approve every preceptor for the course in question. Some hospitals state their own rules, such as Advocate's student page allowing a physician or APRN. Ask your track coordinator before you approach a physician, and have the preceptor's credentials ready for the contract request.
Will Lewis find me a hospital for my acute care practicums?
Lewis's FAQ for its MSN and certificate NP tracks asks students to take an active part by identifying preceptors, with the Clinical Placement Office acting as facilitator and faculty approving each preceptor and site. Its list of clinical agencies describes nursing clinical sites in general, not NP placements, so plan to bring a named preceptor to the contract request.
Can I do NURS 62500 and NURS 62700 at the same hospital?
Nothing Lewis publishes settles it either way. The second course brings in specialty consults and acute care equipment, so the real question is whether the unit offers that range. Staying with a hospital that already has a current affiliation agreement with Lewis can make the second request simpler. Confirm the plan with your track coordinator before you file.
Is the Lewis AGACNP certificate online only?
The certificate is labeled online only in Lewis's 2023 graduate viewbook, but Lewis's current web pages give that label only to the PMHNP certificate. Either way, the 28-credit certificate uses the same clinical courses as the MSN, NURS 61800, NURS 62500 and NURS 62700, completed at approved sites with approved preceptors near you.
