No preceptor and a Lewis practicum coming: your plan for this week

Where things stand

Each Lewis NP practicum is a 16-week course fixed to one semester, and a contract request is approved for a named site, preceptor and term. Between a yes and your first clinical day sit a review Lewis says needs at least two weeks, a longer wait if the agency lacks an affiliation agreement, and the agency's own clearance. Every day still spent searching comes off the front of that chain.

Lewis has not published what happens if no preceptor is approved by the first day: nothing on a late start, a switched term or an automatic Incomplete. That silence is a reason to ask now, while you still have choices, rather than wait to find out.

This week: a narrow, fast search

1. Pin down the settingRead the course title and syllabus. Adult primary care for NURS 61100, pediatric primary care for NURS 64300 and psychiatric care across the lifespan for the PMHNP practicums each rule out many practices at once.
2. Start with people who know youFormer preceptors, NP colleagues, charge nurses, managers and classmates a term ahead. A personal introduction is answered far sooner than a cold call.
3. Look inside your own employerA clinic in your health system may already take students. The points to settle first are on clinicals where you work.
4. Favor agencies that already host studentsAn agency with a current Lewis agreement skips the wait for a new one, which keeps a request in review until the agency signs. Lewis's clinical sites page lists agencies that host its nursing students; ask the office which of them take graduate NP students.
5. Ask for the whole semesterA yes must cover 16 weeks and the course's weekly hours. Settle the actual clinic days before you count it.
6. Check the licenseLook the preceptor up with IDFPR, or the board where the site sits. Lewis lists IDFPR discipline against a preceptor among its reasons to deny a contract.
7. File the day you have a yesComplete every required field, since a request with blanks is not reviewed. The contract portal guide explains each status that follows.

If the semester arrives first

Sometimes the search runs out of calendar. Lewis leaves the answer to your course faculty and track, and the catalog frames the choices. An Incomplete requires that you be passing and have finished most of the course, so it rarely suits a practicum that never started. A withdrawal is available through week 12 of a 16-week course, and because most Lewis practicums are corequisites of a management course, ask your advisor how dropping one affects the other.

Moving a practicum to a later term also shifts every course after it, and the 5-year limit for MSN students keeps running, even through a leave of absence.
