Finding a DuPage County preceptor for your Lewis practicum
DuPage County, home to Lewis University at Oak Brook and about 934,000 people, has hospitals from Endeavor, Northwestern, Advocate and UChicago Medicine AdventHealth, yet the systems that publish NP student rules expect you to arrive with a preceptor already committed. DuPage at a glance: towns, size and the drive from Romeoville
DuPage is a one-county region with 934,298 residents in the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimate, spread across Naperville, Wheaton, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Lombard, Addison, Carol Stream, Hinsdale and more. Naperville, with 153,114 people, crosses into Will County, and a slice of Aurora sits inside DuPage.
By road from the Romeoville campus, Naperville is about 13 miles, roughly 26 minutes; Wheaton about 24 miles, roughly 40 minutes; and Winfield about 27 miles, roughly 45 minutes, before rush-hour traffic. USDA codes DuPage fully metropolitan, and the DuPage County Health Department is based in Wheaton. Endeavor, Advocate and Northwestern: what their student pages ask
Endeavor Health operates Edward Hospital and Linden Oaks in Naperville plus Elmhurst Hospital, and its rotation page marks Linden Oaks as psychiatric only. According to its student pages, schools send rotation requests through myClinicalExchange by firm cutoffs, with March 1 covering fall and winter rotations and August 1 covering spring and summer, and no one starts before a fully executed school agreement. Endeavor's licensed-nurse practicum application expects the student to secure a willing preceptor first, then collects license, immunization, background check and drug screen records.
Advocate Good Samaritan in Downers Grove is Advocate Health Care's DuPage hospital. Advocate's placement page says it takes Illinois inpatient NP students through the school's myClinicalExchange account, and it names Illinois NP rotations as ones where the preceptor search stays with the student. The preceptor comes first.
Northwestern Medicine owns Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield and Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton. Its west-suburbs practicum page tells APRN students needing patient-care hours that its form is not theirs to use, and no separate APRN application for those hospitals appears on its site.
UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale and GlenOaks, and Duly Health and Care's clinics, post no public NP student page, so they count only as places a preceptor might practice. Edward, Linden Oaks, Good Samaritan, Central DuPage and Hinsdale are named on Lewis's Nursing Student Clinical Sites page for BSN clinical groups.
Health centers and HRSA shortage data for DuPage
DuPage's federally funded health centers are VNA Health Care in Bensenville, Carol Stream, Villa Park and Wheaton; ACCESS Community Health Network in Addison, Bloomingdale and West Chicago; and Hamdard Health Alliance and Legacy Medical Care in Addison. They are the county's safety-net practices for primary care and family-focused practicums.
HRSA's September 2026 files show DuPage well served for primary care, with no geographic or population shortage area. Its lone designation is a facility HPSA for Hamdard's Addison center, scored 19 on a scale where higher means greater need.
Mental health is thinner. All of DuPage falls inside HRSA's low-income 'LI-Northern IL MHCA' designation, scored 17 and shared with Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and much of northwest Illinois, while a low-income Franklin Park designation reaching into eastern DuPage (16) is proposed for withdrawal. Primary care offices here field requests from many schools, so ask early and specifically; PMHNP students will find the documented need at the health centers and Linden Oaks.
Which DuPage settings fit which Lewis practicum
Lewis's NP practicums last 16 weeks apiece, and each needs a different kind of preceptor.

Lewis still decides: your Clinical Coordinator or track lead faculty confirms the fit, and the site goes in through a contract request, with an affiliation agreement drafted if none exists. The identifying preceptors guide covers your side of that.
Timing DuPage requests against Lewis's calendar
DuPage's hospital routes run on their own clocks. Endeavor's August 1 cutoff for spring and summer comes well before Lewis's spring 2027 semester opens on January 19, and its March 1 cutoff falls months ahead of fall. Lewis's portal adds a review of at least two weeks, longer when an agency agreement must be drafted and signed; see the contract portal guide and affiliation agreement guide.
Illinois law is silent on who finds an NP student's preceptor, so Lewis's own rule applies. When you approach a DuPage nurse practitioner, mention the continuing education credit Illinois grants APRN preceptors, set out in the preceptor CE guide.
A hospital request without a named preceptor stalls in DuPage. Advocate says it does not locate preceptors for Illinois NP students, and Endeavor's licensed-nurse application begins only after a preceptor has agreed.

Questions Lewis students ask
Does Edward Hospital take Lewis NP students?
Edward belongs to Endeavor Health, whose pages set the rules: a school request in myClinicalExchange by March 1 or August 1, a signed school agreement, and a preceptor who has agreed before a licensed nurse applies. Edward is on Lewis's BSN clinical agency list, but an NP rotation there turns on your preceptor and Lewis's approval.
Can I do PMHNP clinicals at Linden Oaks in Naperville?
Linden Oaks is Endeavor Health's psychiatric hospital, listed on Endeavor's rotation page for psychiatric rotations only, so it is a natural place for a PMHNP student to look. Requests follow Endeavor's myClinicalExchange process with the preceptor agreed first. Lewis's PMHNP practicums span the lifespan; the PMHNP practicum guide covers each course.
Does Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage have an NP student application?
Not a public one. Northwestern's west-suburbs practicum page, which covers Central DuPage and Delnor, says its application does not serve APRN students who need patient-care hours. Northwestern does post a graduate APRN application for its north and northwest suburban hospitals, described in the Lake and McHenry guide.
Do I have to find a preceptor near Oak Brook?
No. Lewis approves a site for its fit with your course, and its published rules tie nothing to Oak Brook. A preceptor near home or work usually makes the 16 weeks easier, since Oak Brook classes, a nursing job and clinic days all compete for your week.
