The west Cook suburbs, home to about 594,000 people roughly 28 to 29 miles from Romeoville, hold Loyola Medicine's three hospitals, Rush Oak Park, the Hines VA and a state psychiatric hospital. Loyola and Rush Oak Park post no public route for NP students from other schools and the VA works through school affiliation agreements, so your Lewis request begins with a named preceptor, and finding one is our job.

Townships, towns and the drive from Romeoville

This region approximates the West District of Cook County's public health department, counted through Leyden, Lyons, Norwood Park, Proviso, River Forest and Riverside townships plus Berwyn, Cicero and Oak Park. On the ground that means Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, Maywood, Melrose Park, Bellwood, Broadview, Hillside, Westchester, Berwyn, Cicero, Riverside, Brookfield, La Grange, La Grange Park, Western Springs, Countryside, Lyons, Summit, Franklin Park, Northlake, Elmwood Park, River Grove, Norridge, Harwood Heights, Schiller Park, Rosemont and Hines. The county's own file leaves Oak Park without a district.

Those nine townships counted 593,633 residents in July 2025. By a no-traffic routing estimate, Maywood sits about 28 miles and roughly 44 minutes out from Romeoville, Oak Park about 29 miles and roughly 50 minutes. The state's hospital report card lists five hospitals here; West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park has closed and no longer appears.

Loyola, Rush Oak Park, La Grange and the Hines VA

Loyola Medicine, a member of Trinity Health, anchors the region with Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood (547 licensed beds), Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park (254) and MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn (374). Gottlieb and MacNeal are Level II trauma centers, and all three hospitals hold Magnet designation. Loyola's public pages describe nursing specialties but no process for NP students from outside schools; Loyola University Chicago's nursing school is the system's academic partner.

Rush Oak Park Hospital does publish a rotation page, but it is written for undergraduates: contracted schools request nursing and CNA rotations by form, with deadlines of August 17 for fall, December 13 for spring and April 19 for summer. No APRN route appears there. UChicago Medicine AdventHealth La Grange posts no NP student process either.

Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital says it is affiliated with 70 colleges and universities in associated health professions and trains more than 1,300 people a year, with Loyola's Stritch School of Medicine as its primary affiliate. VA training runs through academic affiliation agreements: the school arranges one with the local VA's Designated Education Officer and carries primary responsibility for the education program, while the VA keeps full responsibility for patient care.

Every one of these, Loyola's trio, Rush Oak Park, AdventHealth La Grange and Hines, shows up among the agencies Lewis names for undergraduate clinical groups; that list concerns BSN rotations, not NP openings.

Health centers and Cicero-Berwyn shortages

Five health center organizations operate here: PCC Community Wellness Center in Oak Park, Berwyn and Melrose Park; Pillars Community Health in Countryside, La Grange Park and Summit; Alivio Medical Center in Berwyn; ACCESS Community Health Network in Cicero, Melrose Park and Summit; and Greater Family Health in Franklin Park.

For primary care, HRSA's September 2026 files keep a designated low-income shortage area across 26 census tracts in Cicero and Berwyn, scored 16. PCC carries a facility designation of 21 and Pillars 19. On the mental health side, a Cicero/Berwyn geographic area (10) and a Franklin Park low-income area (16) that reaches into DuPage are both proposed for withdrawal, while PCC scores 20 and Pillars 21. John J. Madden Mental Health Center, a state psychiatric hospital, holds a mental health designation of its own, scored 20.

Lewis practicums and west Cook settings

Primary care for NURS 61100 and NURS 61800: PCC, Pillars, Alivio, ACCESS or Greater Family Health sites, or family and internal medicine offices from Oak Park to La Grange. The NURS 61800 guide explains that course's adolescent-to-older-adult range.
NURS 64100 and NURS 64300 call for primary care of women and of children; outpatient offices are the setting, and the Cicero-Berwyn designation shows where community need is on record.
In acute care (NURS 62500, NURS 62700), Loyola's Maywood hospital and the Gottlieb and MacNeal trauma centers are the landmarks, and a Lewis request there starts with a preceptor on their staff; the AGACNP courses page has the details.
Psychiatric practicums, NURS 63300 through NURS 63700, cover every age group. The Madden center, PCC and Pillars all carry mental health designations scored 20 or higher.

Questions Lewis students ask

Does Loyola University Medical Center take NP students from Lewis?

Loyola Medicine posts no public process for NP students from outside schools, and Lewis lists Loyola's Maywood, Gottlieb and MacNeal hospitals only among the agencies for its BSN clinicals. If a Loyola clinician agrees to precept you, the site goes through Lewis's contract request like any other, and the Clinical Placement Office handles the agreement side.

Can I do a practicum at the Hines VA as a Lewis student?

Possibly, if the pieces line up. VA student training rests on an academic affiliation agreement between the school and the VA, arranged through the Designated Education Officer. Hines appears on Lewis's BSN agency list, so ask the Clinical Placement Office whether that agreement extends to NP students, and bring a named VA preceptor to the request.

Is West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park still open?

No. Prime Healthcare releases from May 11 and September 1, 2026 refer to West Suburban as closed, and it no longer appears on the Illinois Hospital Report Card. In Oak Park itself, Rush Oak Park Hospital and PCC Community Wellness Center's Oak Park site remain as nearby landmarks for a clinical search.

Does Rush Oak Park Hospital accept nurse practitioner students?

Its public rotation page covers undergraduate nursing and CNA rotations for contracted schools, with request deadlines each term, and shows no APRN route. Rush Oak Park does appear on Lewis's BSN agency list. An NP rotation there would start with a Rush Oak Park clinician willing to precept you, followed by Lewis's contract request.
