Central Illinois practicums for Lewis NP students, metro by metro
Central Illinois is the largest region in these guides: 38 counties and nearly 1.7 million people, from Quincy on the Mississippi to Danville on the Indiana line. Its health systems handle outside NP students in very different ways, from Carle's online application to an HSHS program limited to named schools, so this guide takes the region one metro at a time.

Champaign (209,972), Sangamon (194,170), Peoria (178,553) and McLean (171,419) are the most populous counties; Scott has 4,866 residents.
Peoria, Bloomington-Normal and Champaign-Urbana: OSF and Carle
OSF HealthCare is based in Peoria. Saint Francis Medical Center, its largest hospital, houses OSF Children's Hospital of Illinois. OSF also runs St. Joseph in Bloomington, Heart of Mary in Urbana, Sacred Heart in Danville, St. Mary in Galesburg and Holy Family in Monmouth. Its Clinical Education page gives APRN and DNP students a dedicated advanced practice contact, and its nursing page says students from other accredited programs rotate alongside those of OSF's own two colleges.
Carle now owns Methodist and Proctor in Peoria and the Pekin hospital, all former UnityPoint sites that joined on April 1, 2023, plus the former Advocate BroMenn in Normal and Eureka, which joined in 2020, and Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. NP students request rotations through Carle's online Clinical Rotation Application, which lists Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal and Peoria as locations; Carle notes that applying does not assure a spot.
Community health centers here include Heartland Health Services in Peoria, Pekin and Eureka, Chestnut Family Health Center in Bloomington, Promise Healthcare in Champaign, Urbana and Rantoul, and Solvera Health in Peoria and Galesburg. In Danville, VA Illiana trains students under academic affiliation agreements that a school arranges with the local VA.
Springfield and Decatur: Memorial's platform and the HSHS limit
Memorial Health runs hospitals in Springfield, Decatur, Jacksonville, Lincoln and Taylorville and manages all student placements through Clinician Nexus. Its page gives students who must set up their own clinical a written path: build a Clinician Nexus profile and search Memorial's openings. That suits Lewis's expectation that students take an active role in identifying preceptors.
HSHS has St. John's Hospital and St. John's Children's Hospital in Springfield, St. Mary's in Decatur, St. Francis in Litchfield and Good Shepherd in Shelbyville. Its advanced practice student program is written for St. John's College of Nursing and Millikin University students and for HSHS colleagues, with no route described for other schools, so a Lewis search here runs through Memorial, SIU and independent practices.
SIU School of Medicine's health center, SIU Center for Family Medicine, has sites in Springfield, Decatur, Quincy, Jacksonville, Lincoln, Taylorville and Pittsfield. Crossing Healthcare also serves Decatur.
Mattoon and Quincy: windows that close months ahead
Sarah Bush Lincoln in Mattoon accepts NP students from several universities, gives its own nurses priority and takes outside candidates on a limited basis. Its selection committee meets in May for practicums starting June through December and in November for those starting December through June, with applications due May 1 and November 1 through its Professional Development Coordinator. It asks students not to contact providers directly.
Blessing Health in Quincy requires a signed Educational Affiliation Agreement with the school, a current Illinois license and a rotation packet filed no more than 12 months ahead: by October 1 for January to May, or March 1 for June and July. Blessing employees get priority, and decisions can take up to 16 weeks after review.
Blessing's FNP rotations run up to 144 hours, in areas such as family practice, pediatrics and women's health. By our arithmetic, that leaves 36 hours of a 180-hour Lewis practicum for a second preceptor, and any added site needs its own contract request.
Shortage areas and the setting each Lewis course needs
In HRSA's files (records dated September 24, 2026), only McLean, Tazewell, Menard and Piatt lack a whole-county primary care designation, and Moultrie's is proposed for withdrawal. Vermilion's low-income designation scores 19, Champaign's and Christian's 18, Macon's 17. HRSA also lists 42 rural health clinics here as shortage facilities. For mental health, all 38 counties fall inside the low-income Central Area designation (score 18), while the separate geographic ones, such as Vermilion's and McDonough's, are proposed for withdrawal.
Lewis expects you to play an active part in identifying preceptors, and each one must pass review by Clinical Coordinators or track lead faculty (identifying preceptors). Each practicum runs 16 weeks:

Questions Lewis students ask
Can a Lewis NP student rotate at HSHS St. John's in Springfield?
HSHS's own page limits its advanced practice student program to HSHS colleagues and two schools, St. John's College of Nursing and Millikin University, and sets out no route for anyone else. In Springfield, look instead at Memorial Health, which lets self-placing students search openings in Clinician Nexus, and at SIU Center for Family Medicine's sites.
What are the Sarah Bush Lincoln NP practicum deadlines?
May 1 and November 1. The selection committee meets in May for practicums starting June through December and in November for those starting December through June. A Lewis spring 2027 practicum begins January 19, so it points to the November 1, 2026 date. Sarah Bush Lincoln gives its own nurses priority and asks students not to contact providers.
Which central Illinois systems expect students to find their own preceptor?
Memorial Health says it most directly: students who must arrange their own clinical build a Clinician Nexus profile and search its openings. Sarah Bush Lincoln works the other way, routing applications through a selection committee and asking students not to approach providers, and Carle uses its online Clinical Rotation Application. HSHS describes no route for other schools' students.
Does a Missouri license help for clinicals around Quincy?
Blessing's page says students licensed in both Illinois and Missouri may have more options, though it still requires a current Illinois license. A site across the river in Missouri would be an out-of-Illinois placement, which Lewis's out-of-state placement policy says may need further approval before it starts; see clinicals outside Illinois.
