Finding a Lewis NP preceptor in the Metro East
The Metro East is the Illinois side of greater St. Louis: eight counties and about 672,000 people, roughly 250 to 265 miles from Romeoville. Published hospital routes for outside NP students are scarce here, which puts the region's large health center network and its independent practices at the center of a Lewis search.

Eight counties on the Illinois side of St. Louis
Every county in this guide belongs to the St. Louis, MO-IL metro area under OMB's 2023 delineation: Madison, St. Clair and Monroe as central counties, the other five as outlying ones. Even so, Calhoun, with 4,300 residents, is rural in character.

From the Romeoville campus, Edwardsville is about 247 miles, Alton about 252 and Belleville about 264. Routing tools tend to overstate the hours on a trip this long, so think in miles.
What the region's hospitals publish about NP students
Of the systems researched here, one names a contact for outside advanced practice students, one limits its program to named schools, and for the rest no NP process was found.
- OSF HealthCare, Saint Anthony's Health Center in Alton: OSF's Clinical Education page sends APRN and DNP students to its advanced practice student contact.
- HSHS, with St. Elizabeth's in O'Fallon, St. Joseph's in Breese and in Highland, and Holy Family in Greenville: the system's advanced practice student page covers only HSHS colleagues and students of Millikin University or St. John's College of Nursing, and St. Elizabeth's lists its affiliated programs by name. No route for other schools is described, so these four hospitals sit outside a Lewis search.
- BJC HealthCare, with Memorial Hospital Belleville, Memorial Hospital Shiloh and Alton Memorial: no public NP student process for these Illinois hospitals is on record.
- Anderson Hospital in Maryville, independent: its nursing student page centers on prelicensure students, and no NP process appears there.
Gateway Regional in Granite City, Touchette Regional Hospital, Jersey Community Hospital, Carlinville Area Hospital and Community Hospital of Staunton round out the list, with no NP student pages on record. Any hospital you use still needs Lewis's contract request and, where none exists, a new affiliation agreement.
Health centers carry the region's primary care
SIHF Healthcare runs 42 active health center sites in these eight counties, the largest network in the region, with locations in East St. Louis, Belleville, Alton, Granite City and Collinsville. Chestnut Health Systems adds centers in Granite City, Belleville and Maryville, and the Macoupin County Public Health Department runs community health centers in Carlinville, Gillespie, Staunton and Girard.
East St. Louis has its own public health agency, the East Side Health District, which covers the city and nearby townships such as Canteen and Stites separately from the St. Clair County Health Department. HRSA counts the SIHF and Macoupin County centers, eight rural health clinics and two correctional facilities as shortage facilities. For a primary care practicum, that network is the first place to look.

HRSA's files (records dated September 24, 2026) show a different pattern in each county. All eight are metropolitan under USDA's 2023 codes, yet every county but Monroe carries some primary care designation.

Lewis wants NP students actively involved in finding their preceptors, with Clinical Coordinators or track lead faculty approving each site and preceptor for the course (how the process runs). Each practicum lasts 16 weeks.

Can I do my Lewis clinicals at HSHS St. Elizabeth's in O'Fallon?
HSHS opens its advanced practice student program to its own colleagues and two named schools, Millikin University and St. John's College of Nursing, and St. Elizabeth's own education page lists its affiliated programs by name. Neither describes a path for other schools. For a Lewis practicum in St. Clair County, SIHF's Belleville and East St. Louis sites, Chestnut's centers and independent practices are the places to focus.
Can a Metro East student do Lewis clinicals in St. Louis, Missouri?
It would be an out-of-Illinois placement. Lewis's catalog says those may need extra permission from Lewis, the host state or Illinois licensing boards, asks you to consult your program advisor first, and ties its graduation requirements to Illinois learning experiences. Settle the question with Lewis before approaching a Missouri preceptor; clinicals outside Illinois explains more.
Where do PMHNP students in the Metro East find psychiatric preceptors?
Every county here sits in a low-income or geographic mental health designation, so psychiatric clinicians are stretched. Lewis's three PMHNP practicums each need 180 hours across the lifespan, so look for outpatient psychiatric practices that see children and adults, and plan all three courses together instead of one at a time.
Does living 250 miles from Romeoville matter for a Lewis NP student?
Not for the practicum itself: you train near home once Lewis approves the site and preceptor. It matters for timing, since a new affiliation agreement stays in review until the agency signs. DNP students should also plan for the on-site DNP Immersions, a minimum of two, held at Lewis's Oak Brook location.
