Lewis NP clinicals in Rockford, DeKalb, the Illinois Valley and the Quad Cities
Northwest Illinois runs from Ottawa, about 49 miles from the Romeoville campus, to the Mississippi River at Moline: 15 counties and roughly a million people. Four health systems here publish their own student placement rules, and no two work alike, so a Lewis search in this region starts with knowing which route each system uses.

Rockford alone counts 147,384 residents. Nine counties are nonmetro, and Jo Daviess and Carroll sit outside any metro or micro area altogether.
Four systems, four different routes for NP students
Whatever a system's own process, Lewis still needs your contract request for the site, plus an affiliation agreement if none exists (how agreements work).
- OSF HealthCare (Saint Anthony in Rockford, plus Dixon, Ottawa, Mendota, Princeton and Kewanee): its Clinical Education page points APRN and DNP students to a dedicated advanced practice student contact; OSF Medical Group office rotations have a separate one.
- Mercyhealth (Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in Rockford; Mercyhealth FHN Hospital in Freeport, the former FHN Memorial, part of Mercyhealth since January 1, 2026): it offers NP students placement assistance through one application per clinical request, backed by an active affiliation agreement and a health and compliance checklist.
- UW Health (SwedishAmerican in Rockford and Belvidere): the school's placement coordinator submits requests in myClinicalExchange, UW-Madison partner schools come first, each student gets at most two rotations, and no new affiliation agreements are being accepted for now.
- UnityPoint Health-Trinity (Rock Island and Moline): a signed school agreement must exist before any preceptorship begins; onboarding paperwork follows once the placement is confirmed, within a standard 30-day window.
Northwestern Medicine's Kishwaukee (DeKalb) and Valley West (Sandwich) hospitals fall under a west-region form that excludes APRN students who need patient care hours. MercyOne Genesis, CGH Medical Center in Sterling and Hammond-Henry in Geneseo have no public NP student page on record.
Mercyhealth tells students and schools not to contact its providers or locations about a placement. Calling a Mercyhealth clinic to ask goes against that instruction; its application is the way in.
Where primary care and mental health need is highest
HRSA's shortage files (records dated September 24, 2026) place whole-county geographic primary care designations on Ogle, Lee, LaSalle, Bureau with Putnam, and Henry and Mercer (scores 8 to 14); Carroll's is proposed for withdrawal. Low-income designations cover Winnebago and Rock Island (18 each) and DeKalb (17). Higher scores mean greater need.
Mental health need reaches every county: the nine from Winnebago to Whiteside form the low-income Northern Illinois mental health area (17), and the six from LaSalle to Mercer sit in the Central Area (18). Most whole-county geographic mental health designations here are proposed for withdrawal, so check HRSA's live look-up.
Community health centers carry much of that primary care: Crusader Community Health around Rockford and Belvidere, Greater Family Health in DeKalb and Sycamore, the Whiteside County Health Department's center in Sterling, Community Health Partnership of Illinois in Mendota, and Community Health Care, Inc. in Rock Island and Moline. HRSA also counts nine rural health clinics here as shortage facilities.
Fitting each Lewis practicum to northwest Illinois
At Lewis, the NP student is expected to help identify preceptors, the Clinical Placement Office acts as facilitator, and Clinical Coordinators or track lead faculty sign off on each site (what that asks of you). Each practicum runs 16 weeks, and the preceptor must fit that course.

The river, the neighbors and the competition
From Moline or Rock Island, Davenport sits just across the Mississippi, but a clinical there is an out-of-Illinois placement. Lewis's catalog warns that placements beyond Illinois can require sign-off from the university, the other state or Illinois's licensing boards, and Iowa's board expects post-licensure students at Iowa clinicals to hold an Iowa or multistate license, which an Illinois license is not. Other states' schools want the same hospital slots: the Illinois Board of Nursing's May 2026 minutes approved an Iowa university's nursing clinicals at OSF Saint Anthony and SwedishAmerican and renewed its placements at MercyOne Genesis, Hammond-Henry and Trinity Moline. Questions Lewis students ask
Can a Lewis student do clinicals at SwedishAmerican in Rockford?
Only where an agreement already exists. UW Health's student page says requests come from the school's placement coordinator through myClinicalExchange and that new affiliation agreements are on hold. Ask the Clinical Placement Office whether Lewis has one in place. If not, OSF, Mercyhealth and the Rockford health centers are the places to focus.
Are Ottawa and DeKalb close enough to Lewis for a practicum?
Ottawa is about 49 miles from the Romeoville campus and DeKalb about 56, the nearest parts of this region. Distance shapes your commute, not Lewis's decision: what counts is fit with your course, faculty approval and a signed agreement. OSF Saint Elizabeth in Ottawa and Greater Family Health in DeKalb are examples of where students look.
Should I call Mercyhealth providers in Rockford or Freeport about precepting?
No. Mercyhealth's rotation request page asks students and schools not to contact its providers or locations about placement, and it takes one application per clinical request. It says it offers placement assistance to NP students who apply that way, provided an active affiliation agreement and its health and compliance checklist are in place.
How hard is a PMHNP preceptor to find in northwest Illinois?
Every county here sits inside a low-income mental health shortage designation, a sign that demand outruns psychiatric clinicians. Lewis's PMHNP track needs three 180-hour psychiatric practicums across the lifespan, so line up all three early rather than one semester at a time.
