Lewis posts one NC-SARA table per graduate nursing program on its Accreditation and Licensure page. For Maine the answers line up cleanly: enrollment is authorized on all 20 tables, and every nurse practitioner table marks licensure Yes. No date is printed on the files; their metadata shows March 27, 2026.

Maine practice rules and what they mean for preceptors

Maine is full practice on AANP's map, with a transition period attached: newly licensed NPs spend their first 24 months or more under a physician's or experienced NP's supervision, unless a clinic or hospital with a physician medical director employs them. An NP past that window carries an independent panel, a good fit for the adult and family primary care hours of NURS 61100 and NURS 61800.

Our research turned up nothing from the Maine board addressing out-of-state schools that send students to Maine clinical sites. Chapter 7 of its rules deals with approving Maine's prelicensure schools, and the Nurse Practice Act's student exemption is written for people working toward a first license, which a licensed RN in a Lewis graduate course is not. Lewis's own policy fills the gap: talk any Maine placement over with your program advisor before it starts.

Where Maine NP students look for sites

Census estimates for 2025 put about 578,000 people in the Portland-South Portland metro, about 158,000 around Bangor and about 116,000 in Lewiston-Auburn. The state's large systems include Central Maine Healthcare, MaineGeneral Health, Northern Light Health and MaineHealth, alongside independent practices in towns of every size.

Primary care, women's health and pediatric students can look well beyond those four systems. AGACNP students, by contrast, need hospital units for NURS 62500 and NURS 62700, and each system handles student requests through its own education office.

Your RN license, the compact and the Illinois option

Maine has taken part in the Nurse Licensure Compact since early 2018, which means a nurse whose primary residence is Maine can hold a multistate RN license that also works in other compact states. That license fits Lewis's MSN admission rule for a Maine practicum, since Lewis accepts a license from the state where you practice, and a DNP residency in Maine needs the same. The RN license guide lists each program's exact phrasing.

Illinois has not joined the compact, so a Maine multistate license does not carry over to an Illinois site. Lewis's FAQ does offer out-of-state students a route through Illinois, an Illinois license with the practicum done there; that path starts with an IDFPR application well before the term.

From a Maine practice to an approved Lewis contract

Lewis puts the preceptor search on the student and keeps the approving for itself: its Clinical Placement Office acts as facilitator, and each Maine site and preceptor needs a yes from Clinical Coordinators or track lead faculty. Every site then goes through the contract portal, and a practice new to Lewis needs an affiliation agreement signed before you start.

Can I complete Lewis's online FNP program while living in Maine?

Lewis's March 2026 tables authorize enrollment from Maine and mark the FNP MSN, the FNP BSN to DNP and the FNP certificate as meeting Maine's licensure requirements. Two cautions come with that: Lewis's footnote about possible limits on clinical rotations in any state, and its policy that practicums beyond Illinois be discussed with your advisor before they begin.

Do I have to travel to Illinois while studying from Maine?

For the online MSN, Lewis publishes no required on-campus intensive. DNP students are a different case: they must attend two or more DNP Immersions, which Lewis holds at its Oak Brook site, and the DNP page lists health assessment lab work there too. Your track coordinator can confirm what your plan of study expects.

Does the Maine State Board of Nursing have to approve Lewis before my clinicals?

Research found no such Maine requirement; the board's Chapter 7 rule concerns Maine's own prelicensure schools. Approval still matters, just from Lewis: faculty must approve the preceptor and site, and Lewis's catalog says a placement beyond Illinois may call for extra permission, so ask your advisor early.

Can a physician precept my Lewis practicum in Maine?

Lewis prints no track-by-track list of preceptor credentials, so ask your course faculty and track coordinator about physician preceptors. What Lewis does publish is that Clinical Coordinators or track lead faculty approve every preceptor and that licensing discipline can lead to a denied contract.
