RN license requirements for Lewis graduate nursing

Every Lewis graduate nursing program asks for a current RN license, but the wording shifts from program to program. The MSN and the NP certificates accept Illinois or your state of practice, the BSN to DNP ties the license to your practicum state, and the DNP ties it to the state where you complete your residency.

The license rule, program by program

These lines come from Lewis's 2026-27 catalog and program pages. They are admission requirements, and they also shape where your clinical hours can happen.

The School Nurse line is the strictest for a reason: Lewis's state tables say licensure for that program is approved for Illinois only. The School Nurse guide covers that route and its ISBE testing.

Match the license to where your patients are

The BSN to DNP and DNP lines leave no doubt: the license follows the clinical location. The MSN line, "Illinois or state/country of practice", can be read as the state where you work as an RN or the state where your practicum sits, and Lewis does not spell out which reading it intends.

Lewis's FAQ points the same way for out-of-state students, noting that they have the option to obtain licensure in Illinois and complete the practicum in Illinois. Our working rule, which is our reading rather than a Lewis statement, is simple: hold an active RN license in the state where your practicum site is before you file the contract request, and confirm that plan with your track coordinator.

Your license has to be valid where the site is, not just where you live. If the best preceptor is across a state line, settle the license first and file the request second.

The Nurse Licensure Compact and Illinois

Illinois is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, and the compact's own map shows no pending Illinois legislation. Illinois has not joined the APRN Compact either. A multistate license issued by a compact state therefore does not reach Illinois; a site in Illinois means an Illinois RN license, which IDFPR issues.

Many of the other states Lewis enrolls from have implemented the compact, according to the compact's own records: Alabama, Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. Massachusetts has enacted it with implementation targeted for May 2027, and Hawaii and Michigan are not members.

Lewis's pages do not mention the compact at all. Whether a multistate license meets Lewis's wording for a practicum in a different compact state is therefore a question for your track coordinator before you rely on it.

Studying from outside Illinois

Lewis's graduate catalog warns that a clinical or practicum placement outside Illinois can need extra permission from Lewis itself, from the state where the site is, or from Illinois licensing boards, and tells students to talk with their program's academic advisor and the licensing agencies involved before one begins. Its state disclosure tables add that a state can restrict clinical rotations even when a license there is within reach.

That makes your license one piece of a larger question. The clinicals outside Illinois guide covers permissions, and the state authorization guide lists the 18 jurisdictions Lewis enrolls from and how each one is marked.

If you move during the program, nothing Lewis publishes obliges you to report it, though the catalog puts the job of tracking changes in outside licensure requirements on you, along with raising their effect on your program with the University. Talk to your track coordinator before the move, not after.

Your preceptor's license matters too

Licensing runs both ways in a Lewis contract request. In the contract legend, a preceptor's IDFPR disciplinary history is one of the listed grounds for denial, next to conduct concerns about a preceptor or agency. A preceptor with a clean record in the state where they practice keeps that door closed. The legend also says a request can be denied at any stage, even after approval, so the record matters for the whole term, not just the day you file. The preceptor requirements guide covers what Lewis publishes about who can precept.

After graduation, your next license is the APRN. Illinois requires national certification and an APRN-level graduate degree or post-master's certificate in a clinical specialty, and IDFPR takes the application. The Illinois APRN license guide walks through it.

How we plan around your license

We start every search from where you are licensed. With an Illinois license, we look across the Illinois communities where you live and work; with a license from another state, we search there and flag early any site that would need a second license. For DNP students we search in the residency state named on your application.

Before a preceptor's name reaches you, we confirm the preceptor's license standing in the state where they practice and gather the credential details the contract request needs, laid out so you can enter them in one sitting. If your license picture changes mid-program, through a move or a new job across a state line, we rework the search around the license you will hold when the practicum starts. Tell us your program and license state on the placement request form.

Questions Lewis students ask

Do I need an Illinois RN license for Lewis's online MSN?

Not for admission if you practice elsewhere: the MSN accepts Illinois licensure or licensure where you practice, whether that is another state or another country. Where your practicum happens is the bigger question. A site in Illinois calls for an Illinois license, and Lewis's FAQ notes that out-of-state students may obtain Illinois licensure and complete the practicum there.

Can I start Lewis's MSN before I pass the NCLEX?

Only through Lewis's step-up route for its own BSN seniors, who may apply before they hold an RN license. They must be licensed by the end of their first graduate semester and practicing by the end of the second. Every other applicant needs a current RN license at admission.

Which RN license do I need for a Lewis DNP residency in another state?

The license for the residency state. Lewis's DNP admission line asks for a current, unencumbered RN license issued where the residency will take place. If your plans shift to a site across a state line, sort out that state's license before the setting is approved.

Does a Wisconsin multistate license let me do clinicals in Illinois?

No. Because Illinois sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, a Wisconsin multistate license, like one from any compact state, carries no practice privilege there. For an Illinois practicum site, plan on an Illinois RN license issued by IDFPR, and leave time for it before you file the contract request.

Does my RN license have to be unencumbered?

The MSN, certificate and DNP admission lines all use the word unencumbered, and Lewis's contract legend also screens preceptors for IDFPR discipline. If anything is pending against your license, talk to your track coordinator before you apply or file a request, since Lewis's pages do not describe how it handles those cases.
