Lewis NP students in New Mexico: clinicals, board rules and preceptors
New Mexico is on Lewis's short list of states cleared for online graduate nursing enrollment, and Lewis marks all four NP specialties, by MSN, BSN to DNP or certificate, as meeting New Mexico licensure requirements. One state rule deserves attention early: when an outside school's clinical training in New Mexico stretches past one semester, the school has to go to the Board of Nursing for placement approval.

What Lewis publishes for New Mexico
Every one of Lewis's 20 graduate nursing disclosure tables authorizes enrollment from New Mexico, and each NP table marks licensure Yes. The NP programs themselves are offered at Oak Brook or online, so a New Mexico student studies online and trains locally.

The more-than-one-semester rule
The rule sits in New Mexico's nursing education regulations at 16.12.3.11(A)(2) NMAC. Boiled down, once an outside school's students gain clinical or field experience in New Mexico for longer than a semester, that school must apply to the board for clinical placement approval and also clear New Mexico's minimum standards in 16.12.3.12. The regulation is pitched at schools whose graduates will be licensed in New Mexico and never mentions NP education, so how it treats a Lewis graduate practicum is an open question.
Here is some arithmetic of our own, not a board or Lewis ruling: a Lewis FNP completes four 16-week practicums, so staying in New Mexico for all of them means training there across several semesters, well past the rule's trigger. Lewis publishes nothing about a New Mexico application, so raise it with the Clinical Placement Office before your first contract request.
Ask Lewis about New Mexico's clinical placement approval before your first practicum, not your second: the rule turns on how many semesters you train in the state.
Preceptors and practice in a full practice state
New Mexico's rules also say who counts as a clinical preceptor: a nurse with two years or more of experience whose license is equal to or higher than the one the student will earn, a standard any school cleared for New Mexico placements must honor. For a Lewis NP course that favors a seasoned NP, and AANP lists New Mexico as full practice, so an established NP there typically holds independent authority.
Greater Albuquerque holds about 925,000 people by 2025 Census estimates, Las Cruces almost a quarter million, and the Santa Fe and Farmington metros roughly 157,000 and 120,000. For hospital training, the names are UNM Health System, home to the state's only academic medical center, plus Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Lovelace Health System and CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe. AGACNP students need hospitals like these for NURS 62500 and NURS 62700; primary care and psychiatric students can look well beyond them.
Licensing: New Mexico is in the compact, Illinois is not
Since January 2018, New Mexico has been a working member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, and its board grants multistate licenses to residents who qualify. Any New Mexico license, single-state or multistate, covers a New Mexico practicum under Lewis's MSN wording, and a DNP residency in the state needs the same. Illinois never joined the compact. If you choose the route Lewis's FAQ offers out-of-state students, an Illinois license and a practicum completed in Illinois, the first step is an application to IDFPR.

Does Lewis have an Albuquerque campus for nursing students?
Lewis's locations page lists Albuquerque among its sites, but its graduate nursing pages describe the NP programs as offered at Oak Brook or online and say nothing about nursing in New Mexico. Plan on online coursework, local clinicals approved through Lewis's contract portal, and any Oak Brook visits your plan of study requires, such as DNP Immersions.
Is Lewis's online FNP approved for NP licensure in New Mexico?
Lewis's FNP MSN, FNP BSN to DNP and FNP certificate tables all mark New Mexico Yes for enrollment and Yes for meeting licensure requirements. Who can precept a Lewis NP student in New Mexico?
Lewis's faculty approve every preceptor, and Lewis publishes no credential list by track. New Mexico adds its own floor: at least two years of nursing experience, plus a license no lower than the one a student is studying for. For a Lewis NP student, that usually means an experienced NP; ask your track coordinator before relying on a physician.
What does a New Mexico nurse need for a practicum in Illinois?
An Illinois RN license. Because Illinois stayed out of the Nurse Licensure Compact, a New Mexico multistate license carries no weight there. Lewis's FAQ confirms out-of-state students may license in Illinois and complete the practicum there; IDFPR issues that license, and the Illinois agency will check it before you start.
