Lewis's March 2026 tables open every nurse practitioner route to New Jersey nurses: enrollment is authorized, and the MSN, BSN to DNP and certificate curricula are all marked as meeting New Jersey's licensure requirements. Lewis links 20 graduate nursing disclosure tables from its Accreditation and Licensure page. New Jersey's row reads Yes for enrollment on every one of them, and the twelve NP tables add a second Yes for licensure.

Joint protocols, the March 2026 law and your preceptor
On AANP's May 2026 map New Jersey is still reduced practice: to prescribe medications or order devices, a New Jersey NP works from a joint protocol signed with a collaborating physician. S2996/A4052, signed March 30, 2026, loosened that for veterans of the role: once an APN logs over 5,000 hours of licensed advanced practice within a population focus, primary care and behavioral health care no longer need the protocol. General obstetrics and elective aesthetic work stay outside the carve-out, other APNs keep the protocol, and the pandemic waiver ended in April 2026.
In a preceptor search this plays out practically. A seasoned family or psychiatric NP may now practice on their own authority, while a newer NP, or one whose work includes general obstetrics, still practices under a physician protocol. Lewis publishes no rule on either arrangement, so describe the practice accurately when you file and let Lewis's faculty judge the fit.
Board rules for schools outside New Jersey
Nothing in New Jersey's nursing rules that research reviewed obliges a school headquartered elsewhere to register, apply or notify anyone before its students work in New Jersey sites. The accreditation chapter, N.J.A.C. 13:37, is about programs inside New Jersey's higher education system, and its one clause on clinical agencies deals with the reverse case: New Jersey schools sending students across state lines. The board's own website blocked access during research with a security check, so anything posted only there went unread; if a site raises the question, ask the board.
The rule that clearly binds you is Lewis's. Its catalog treats any practicum beyond Illinois as something that may need extra sign-off, from Lewis, New Jersey or Illinois boards, and wants you to raise it with your program's advisor before the term.
Where Lewis NP students in New Jersey look
Census estimates for 2025 count roughly 7.1 million New Jersey residents in the metro anchored by New York and Newark, another 1.4 million on the Philadelphia-Camden side, and much smaller populations around Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton. RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health are the largest names, with Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health and Camden's Cooper University Health Care also major. Each runs its own student process, so a request starts with the site's education office, and AGACNP students will need these hospitals for NURS 62500 and NURS 62700.
Licensing and why New Jersey students bring us in
New Jersey implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact in November 2021, so a nurse who calls New Jersey home can practice on a multistate RN license that also covers other compact states. That satisfies Lewis's MSN wording, a license in Illinois or your state of practice. Questions Lewis students ask
Does New Jersey's 2026 joint protocol law change who can precept me?
It changes how some preceptors practice, not Lewis's approval. Under the March 30, 2026 law, APNs past 5,000 hours in their population focus may provide primary or behavioral health care with no joint protocol; everyone else keeps one. Lewis's faculty approve every preceptor, so state the arrangement accurately in your request.
Does a New Jersey clinical site need board approval for an Illinois school?
Our research found no such New Jersey requirement for schools based in other states, though the board's own website, which blocked access, went unchecked. Lewis's side still counts: faculty approve the site and preceptor, and an out-of-Illinois practicum is worth clearing with your program advisor and the Clinical Placement Office first.
Can I take Lewis's PMHNP certificate online from New Jersey?
Lewis's PMHNP Certificate of Advanced Study table authorizes enrollment from New Jersey and marks the certificate as meeting New Jersey licensure requirements, and Lewis offers that certificate online only. Its three psychiatric practicums, NURS 63300, NURS 63500 and NURS 63700, each need a psychiatric preceptor. The PMHNP certificate guide covers the program.
Which New Jersey settings fit the FNP women's and pediatric practicums?
NURS 64100 covers primary care of women and NURS 64300 primary care of infants and children, so look for women's health practices and pediatric offices, inside a system such as Virtua or Atlantic Health or independent. The current catalog gives each course 2 credits and prints no hours, so confirm the target with your course faculty.
