Hawaii nurses and Lewis's split licensure answer
Lewis enrolls Hawaii residents in every online graduate nursing program, but its NP licensure answer turns on your route. The MSN and BSN to DNP tables mark Hawaii as not meeting licensure requirements, while the post-master's certificate tables mark it as meeting them. Hawaii also stays outside the multistate nurse compact, so any clinical in the islands runs on a Hawaii-issued license.

Enrollment from Hawaii is authorized on all 20 of Lewis's graduate nursing tables. The licensure column then divides by route, the exact reverse of Lewis's Connecticut entries.

From the Hawaii row Lewis links the state's Board of Nursing, housed in the Professional and Vocational Licensing Division of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Lewis gives no reason for the split; the state authorization guide shows both tables.
What the MSN and BSN to DNP No means
If you are a Hawaii RN beginning an NP track through the MSN or the BSN to DNP, Lewis's own table says the program does not meet Hawaii's licensure requirements. In practice, it may not lead to NP licensure in Hawaii. Take that to Lewis's graduate admissions office and the Hawaii Board of Nursing before you enroll, and keep both replies in writing.
Lewis's FAQ describes one option for out-of-state students: an Illinois RN license and practicums in Illinois. From Hawaii that means spending 16-week practicums on the mainland, and it still leaves the Hawaii licensure question open if you plan to practice at home afterward.
Certificate students read a different table. A Hawaii NP adding a specialty through a Lewis certificate is on a route Lewis marks Yes for Hawaii.
The Hawaii answer changes with the route. A certificate student and an MSN student living on the same street in Honolulu get opposite licensure answers from Lewis.
Hawaii's rules on students and licenses
The compact map shows Hawaii with no membership and no pending bill, so a mainland multistate license grants nothing in the islands, and Hawaii clinicals need a license Hawaii issued. When a distance or online post-licensure program has no campus in Hawaii, the Board, per its FAQ, has no approval process for it, no application and no notice requirement. Its faculty need Hawaii licensure solely for teaching or precepting done in person inside the state.
That FAQ illustrates the point with LPN-to-RN and RN-to-BSN examples; graduate and APRN programs go unmentioned in every Hawaii source we hold. Prelicensure is stricter: in 2016 a Board committee on education concluded that a mainland BSN school could not bring a prelicensure student to Hawaii for clinicals. Honolulu, the neighbor islands and the preceptor credit
Urban Honolulu counts 988,703 residents in the Census 2025 estimate, the Hilo-Kailua area 210,043 and Kahului-Wailuku on Maui 160,674. On the hospital side, look to Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), The Queen's Health Systems and Hawaii Pacific Health, parent of Wilcox, Straub, Pali Momi and Kapiolani. They are places to look, not Lewis sites, and a clinic new to Lewis needs an affiliation agreement first.
Hawaii's Healthcare Preceptor Income Tax Credit rewards Hawaii-resident physicians, APRNs and pharmacists who keep a primary care practice in the state and take on supervised clinical training rotations, with the Department of Health certifying rotations under a statewide yearly limit of 1,500 credits. It reaches only students of programs accredited in or located in Hawaii whose enrollment is mostly Hawaii residents, so a Lewis rotation sits outside it.

Can I become an FNP in Hawaii through Lewis's online MSN?
Lewis's FNP MSN table marks Hawaii No for meeting licensure requirements, so the MSN may not lead to FNP licensure in Hawaii, even though enrollment is authorized. Ask Lewis's graduate admissions office and the Hawaii Board of Nursing what the No means for your plans before you enroll.
Why does the Lewis certificate get a different answer for Hawaii?
Lewis's tables do not say. The four Certificate of Advanced Study tables, created in March 2026 like the rest, mark Hawaii Yes where the MSN and BSN to DNP tables mark No. Treat the table for your exact route as Lewis's answer, and ask graduate admissions if the difference affects your choice.
Will my mainland multistate RN license work for clinicals in Hawaii?
No. Hawaii sits outside the compact with no membership bill in the pipeline, which means every Hawaii clinical needs a Hawaii-issued RN license. Lewis's DNP rule points the same way, since a residency needs an RN license from the state that hosts it.
Could a Hawaii preceptor earn the state's preceptor tax credit for teaching me?
Under the program's own rules, no. The credit applies to APRN students only in academic programs accredited in or located in Hawaii whose students are mostly Hawaii residents. Lewis is an Illinois program, so its rotations fall outside the credit.
