Alabama clinicals for Lewis NP students
Lewis authorizes Alabama enrollment and marks its NP programs as meeting Alabama licensure requirements on every route. Alabama then adds a step of its own. A program based in another state must lodge paperwork with the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) at least 15 days before a student's clinicals start there, and the ABN says no student attends without that approval.

Lewis's Alabama disclosure
Alabama shows Yes for enrollment on all 20 of Lewis's graduate nursing tables. In the licensure column it shows Yes on the eight MSN and BSN to DNP nurse practitioner tables and on the four certificate tables.

From the Alabama row Lewis links a Board of Nursing page on CRNP requirements. Every Lewis NP table also says clinical rotations in a designated state may face restrictions even when licensure is met, and Alabama shows why that sentence exists.
The ABN filing that comes before day one
The governing rule is 610-X-3-.09 in the Alabama Administrative Code, and it reaches prelicensure and advanced practice programs headquartered in other states. Fifteen days or more before any clinical learning in Alabama, such a program owes the ABN a letter of intent plus approval documents. The packet lists every student and license number, the clinical supervisor and license number, and the facility, with a statement from that facility's top nursing executive, its DON or CNO.
A yearly out-of-state charge comes on top, billed per program for each calendar year and not refundable. The ABN's FAQ is blunt: students may not attend Alabama clinicals before board approval and payment.
The filing is the school's job, yet it runs on your details. An Alabama practicum therefore moves on two clocks at once, Lewis's contract review and the ABN's lead time, and both need your preceptor, facility and license facts settled early. The license you train on in Alabama
Per the ABN FAQ, MSN and DNP students and others in post-licensure programs who train in Alabama must be licensed by Alabama, valid and unencumbered, or carry a multistate license that another compact state issued. Alabama brought the compact into force on January 1, 2020. An Illinois license, which is single-state, does not qualify on its own.
Lewis's catalog points the same way. MSN admission accepts an RN license from your state of practice, and a DNP residency requires a license in the residency state. The RN license guide lays out each program.
AANP's map puts Alabama in reduced practice: NPs are bound to a physician collaborative agreement, and oversight of NP practice is split between the Board of Nursing and the Board of Medical Examiners.
Where to look, and the Alabama preceptor credit
Birmingham leads Alabama's metro areas with 1,197,766 residents, then Huntsville at 556,444, Mobile at 411,658 and Montgomery at 388,747. Large systems include Huntsville Hospital Health System, UAB Medicine, USA Health, which is the University of South Alabama's academic system, Infirmary Health in Mobile and Baptist Health in Montgomery. Treat them as starting points only; an agency without a Lewis agreement needs one first, as the affiliation agreement guide explains.
For preceptors, Alabama created APTIP, the Preceptor Tax Incentive Program: an Alabama income tax credit earned by community preceptors, NPs included, who teach in medically underserved rural areas, calculated per 160-hour rotation with a yearly ceiling. Alabama's statewide AHEC office administers it until it expires on September 29, 2031. Eligibility hinges on the school, because only rotations supporting programs physically based in Alabama count, which leaves Lewis rotations out.

Can I enroll in Lewis's online AGPCNP program from Alabama?
Yes. The AGPCNP tables for the MSN, the BSN to DNP and the certificate all show Alabama Yes for enrollment and Yes for licensure. Clinicals held in Alabama then need the ABN's out-of-state approval, which the program must file at least 15 days before they start.
Who files Alabama's out-of-state program paperwork, Lewis or me?
Alabama's rule assigns it to the program: a letter of intent and approval documents to the ABN, plus the yearly fee. Your part is making sure the preceptor, facility and license details are final early, because the filing lists them. The Clinical Placement Office can tell you how Lewis handles an Alabama request.
Can I use an Illinois RN license for clinicals in Alabama?
Not by itself. For post-licensure students training in Alabama, the ABN wants an Alabama license or another compact state's multistate license. Illinois issues single-state licenses only, so an Illinois-licensed nurse would add an Alabama license before those clinicals.
Can my Alabama preceptor claim the state preceptor tax credit for me?
Based on the program's rules, no. Alabama's credit covers rotations that support programs physically based in Alabama, and rotations for out-of-state programs such as Lewis's do not count. Questions about eligibility go to Alabama's statewide AHEC office, which runs the credit.
